CONCEPT
"Spiraluminance" is a dynamic sculpture that explores the contrast between the steadfast principles of mathematics and science and the ever-changing, ethereal properties of light and nature. The concept delves into the merging of the natural world with the language we employ to understand and describe it. The sculpture's form, derived from the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, symbolizes the consistency and reliability inherent in mathematical structures.
This piece embodies the interplay of light, color, and the prism of human understanding. Utilizing dichroic materials, "Spiraluminance" casts intricate shadows and reflections, creating rainbows of refracted light that dance around its surroundings. The interwoven themes of consistency and change manifest in the juxtaposition of the structured spiral against the dynamic, ever-shifting qualities of light and nature.
DESIGN
The sculpture stands 10 feet tall, anchored by a circular 6-foot diameter base filled with steel beams for ballast. The core structure supports multiple cables attached both at the top and bottom, forming a network of guy wires around the entire structure. Leaf-shaped acrylic discs are strung on steel cables, creating a floating form that mimics the mesmerizing movements of a murmuration of birds.
Interaction with "Spiraluminance" is encouraged; ambient airflow or visitor interaction causes kinetic movement throughout the spiral. Color-changing lights, projected from the top platform, illuminate the dichroic acrylic, casting refracted light prisms onto surrounding surfaces. The immersive experience is enhanced as visitors are invited to "strum" the cables, creating additional movement and influencing the play of light.
MATERIALS
"Spiraluminance" is crafted from a combination of durable and aesthetically pleasing materials. The core structure is made from steel conduit, ensuring stability and longevity. The cables are composed of 1/32" steel cable, providing strength and flexibility. The leaf-shaped acrylic discs are crafted from dichroic material, creating a stunning display of color and reflection. The base is filled with concrete pavers, offering ballast and anchoring the sculpture securely. Waterproof RGB LED recessed lights are inserted into the top platform to showcase the dynamic color changes, ensuring the sculpture's visual impact even in changing weather conditions.
